China vows to counter latest tariff threat by Trump

China recently declared it would respond if the United States stands firm on adding additional tariffs to remaining Chinese imports. President Donald Trump announced on August 1 he would impose a 10 per cent tariff on a further $300 billion worth Chinese imports, which include smart phones, laptops and children’s clothing, beginning September 1.
“If the US is going to implement the additional tariffs, China will have to take necessary countermeasures,” Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular briefing in Beijing on August 2 without elaborating on the measures.
“China has to do a lot of things to turn it around...Frankly if they don’t do it I could always increase it very substantially,” Trump said at an event on the same day.
“China won’t accept any maximum pressure, threat, or blackmailing, and won’t compromise at all on major principle matters,” global news wires quoted Hua as saying. (DS)
