EC publishes guidance on new data protection rules

The European Commission (EC) has published guidance that outlines what steps the EC, national data protection authorities and governments need to take to successfully complete implementation of the new data protection rules across the European Union (EU) on May 25. It also launched a new online tool dedicated to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

While the new regulation provides for a single set of rules directly applicable to all member states, it will still require significant adjustments in certain aspects, like amending existing laws by governments or setting up the European Data Protection Board by data protection authorities, according to an EC press release.

Since the adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation in summer 2016, the EC has actively engaged with all concerned actors — governments, national authorities, businesses, civil society — to prepare the application of the new rules.

The regulation enables free flow of data across the digital single market. It will better protect the privacy of Europeans and reinforce trust and security for consumers, while at the same time opening up new opportunities for businesses, especially smaller ones, the commission claims.

Only two member states have adopted the relevant national legislation till now. The commission has earmarked 1.7 million euro to fund data protection authorities and to train professionals. A further 2 million euro is available to support national authorities in reaching out to businesses, in particular SMEs.

The commission will also engage in events organised across member states to help the stakeholders in their preparation efforts and inform citizens about the impact of the regulation. (DS)
