The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an immediate guidance recently to help expand the availability of surgical apparel, include gowns, hoods and surgeon's and patient examination gloves, for health care professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic, said an FDA statement. The policy is intended to continue till the emergency situation ends.

To respond effectively to the COVID-19 outbreak, appropriate clinical management and infection control in conjunction with implementation of community mitigation efforts are critical, FDA said.

It believes the policy set forth in the new guidance may help address urgent public health concerns by clarifying the regulatory landscape of gowns, other apparel, and gloves.
