Healthy annual growth continues in US' imports of knitted sportswear

US’ imports of knitted sportswear are on an annual growth trajectory. The COVID-19 pandemic had slightly affected the shipment, but it recovered soon. Latest data shows that the US’ imports of the product were worth $61.091 million in the first nine months this year. Last year, the country’s imports of these apparel products had amounted to $72.614 million.

Knitted sportswear items are mainly produced using hosiery fabric. US had imported knitted sportswear worth $48.188 million in 2020, $57.038 million in 2019, $51.766 million in 2018 and $44.318 million in 2017. Imports of these products declined slightly in 2020 compared to the imports of 2019 but recovered again to reach $72.614 million in 2021, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

China was the major supplier of knitted sportswear for the US. The imports from China stood at $23.355 million in the first nine months of the current year, accounting for more than one third of the total imports. US’ imports of these items from Italy and Turkiye were valued at $2.299 million and $0.751 million, respectively, during January to September 2022, as per data obtained from TexPro.

Despite negligible supply from Italy and Turkiye, substantial growth was noticed in the imports of sportswear in the previous years. The inbound trade from Italy jumped to $2.680 million in 2021 from $0.783 million in 2017, the supply from Turkiye increased to $1.071 million in 2021 from $0.283 million in 2017, and the imports from China rose from $21.993 million in 2017 to $29.808 million in 2021.
