India is considering a national policy on retail trade to ensure organised growth of the sector. The commerce and industry ministry has written to the department of consumer affairs to set up a task force with representatives from various stakeholders for framing the policy keeping in view consumers’ interests. The sector engages over 6.5 crore businesses.

The consumer affairs ministry, the nodal agency for regulating internal trade, is already formulating guidelines on e-commerce.

The matter assumes significance as the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) had recently requested the government for the policy and formation of a separate ministry of internal trade, according to a news agency report. (DS)
