India's Apr-May export of leather, its products worth $641.72 mn: CLE

India’s export of leather, its products and footwear reached $641.72 million in April-May 2021 from $146.79 million in the corresponding period last year, according to the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), which expects this growth trend to continue in the coming months. CLE recently said the COVID-19 pandemic led to 27.72 per cent decline in such exports during fiscal 2020-21.
New CLE chairman Sanjay Leekha said that after a prolonged period of market slowdown caused by the pandemic, the sector is back on the growth track with the outbound shipments showing impressive resurgence during this fiscal so far.
Leekha, managing director of Faridabad-based Alpine Apparels Pvt Ltd, took charge as chairman of the council on June 17.
“With increasing prominence of e-commerce platforms and also virtual exhibitions, we must ensure optimum utilisation of the various available digital modes to gain further market access,” he said in a statement.
The council has organised 12 virtual buyer-seller meets/ business-to-business events during 2020-21 in more than 17 countries and has planned about 20 events. It also plans to organise virtual meets and webinars in the United States, Israel, Guatemala and Germany in coordination with Indian missions there.
The Indian Footwear and Accessories Development Programme (IFLADP), implemented by the department for promotion of industry and internal training (DPIIT) during 2017-21, has played a vital role in modernisation and technological upgradation of production units and skilling of workforce.
CLE has requested the government to continue this scheme, which is under consideration, he added.
