Iran to set up apparel industrial park in Fashafouyeh

To restrict imports, boost domestic production and make Iranian apparel more competitive, the government is planning to establish a new apparel industrial park spread over 45 hectares in Fashafouyeh. Located in Tehran province’s Rey county, the park is likely to attract investment from Italian and Turkish apparel producers, along with domestic manufacturers.

At present, 9,818 industrial units operate in Iran’s textile and apparel sector, constituting 11 per cent of all industrial entities in the country. These have created more than 290,000 jobs, accounting for 13 per cent of all industrial jobs in Iran, media reports in the country quoted Afsaneh Mehrabi, director general of textile and clothing department under the ministry of industries, mining and trade, as saying.

Benefits of setting up apparel industrial parks include transfer of know-how, better product quality and lower production costs, according to Mehrabi.

To create more jobs, increase domestic production and revive the country’s aging apparel sector, the ministry has mandated license-seeking foreign representatives, branches and distributors of apparel in Iran to produce goods worth 20 per cent of their import value (in Rial terms) inside Iran and export at least half of that domestic production.

In July, a multilateral memorandum of understanding was signed to set up Iran’s first-ever apparel industrial park near Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport. (DS)
