Japan's clothing imports down 13.5% in H1 FY17

In the first six months of fiscal year 2016-17 beginning April 1, Japan’s clothing and accessories’ imports decreased by 13.5 per cent year-on-year to 1,497.473 billion yen ($12.729 billion). Of this, 92.6 per cent or 1,387.713 billion yen ($11.796 billion) worth of goods were imported from Asia, trade statistics from the ministry of finance showed.

Among the Asian countries, imports from China stood at 953.179 billion yen ($8.102 billion), registering a decrease of 18 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.

During April-September 2016, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 81.472 billion yen ($692 million) from the EU, down 9.1 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 6.994 billion yen ($59.45 million) worth of clothing and accessories from the US, down 28 per cent.

Meanwhile, value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics dropped 12.3 per cent year-on-year to 430.291 billion yen ($3.657 billion) during the period under review. A bulk of these imports valued at 380.112 billion yen ($3.231 billion) were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 240.696 billion yen ($2.046 billion), while imports from Asean nations stood at 84.800 billion yen ($720.86 million).

Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 30.544 billion yen ($259.64 million) from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 12.112 billion yen ($102.96 million), during the same period. (RKS)
