Gunze Ltd, a Japanese clothing brand, has announced that its first quarter (Q1) sales increased to ¥28.3 billion over the corresponding period of prior fiscal. The company’s operating income for the quarter ended on June 30, 2021, escalated to ¥1.5 billion (Q1 FY20: ¥0.3 billion), while ordinary income jumped to ¥1.7 billion (¥0.5 billion).

Although with overall, in-store sales being impacted by weekend closures of large-scale stores, the group’s apparel segment sales rose to ¥12.8 billion (¥11.8 billion). Among the various product categories, women’s innerwear recorded expanded sales, while legwear sales were adversely affected by decreased opportunities for wearing stockings as people refrained from venturing out or attending events following the redeclared state of emergency, Gunze said in a statement.

Gross profit during the Q1 of fiscal 2021 totalled to ¥9.3 billion (¥8.1 billion), while selling, general and administrative expenses remained stagnant at ¥7.8 billion. The Japanese firm’s net income rose to ¥65 million against loss of ¥0.3 billion in first quarter of FY20.
