Kenyan garment manufacturer Rift Valley Textile Ltd (Rivatex) will open a branch in Boya in Kisumu county as part of its expansion plans and wants to employ at least 3,000 to boost the revival of cotton farming after decades of decline. It will also bridge the deficit in production. Construction will start within a few weeks on a 2.5-acre site.

Rivatex has won government tenders for uniforms and the Kisumu branch will specialise in garment tailoring and stitching.

The company will be sending 3,000 sewing machines to the new site in the next few weeks, plus initial staff, and will gradually recruit local residents, factory manager Richard Tanui was quoted as saying by Kenyan media reports.

The garment factory will procure raw materials from 24 cotton-growing counties, most of them in the Lake Region Economic Bloc.

The project is in collaboration with the department of small and medium enterprises, under the ministry of industrialisation, according to Jared Okello, member of parliament from Nyando.
