Jakarta garment workers to get 7% wage hike

24
Jan '12
Jakarta Wage Council has ultimately given its nod for setting the Provincial Sectoral Minimum Wage (UMSP) for the textiles and garment sector at seven percent above the standard minimum wage of Indonesian rupiah 1.52 million (US$ 167.20) per month.

Initially, the Wage Council had decided to raise the USMP by five percent. But, the workers in Nusantara Bonded Zone (KBN) refuted this decision and urged that the USMP for the sector be raised by 20 percent.

Finally, the Council agreed to raise the minimum wage by seven percent, the same rate at which it was raised last year.

Meanwhile, the garment industry employers of Kadin Jakarta, who invest in KBN Korea, have urged the Department of Manpower and Transmigration, Jakarta, to exempt the garment sector from inclusion as major industries of Jakarta. However, they have assured that they would still adhere to the minimum wage norms set by the Government.
