Aba will host an international trade fair on textiles, leather and garment items, Azuka Alagwu, immediate former President of the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ACCIMA) has said.
Speaking at the 13th Annual General Meeting of ACCIMA, Mr. Alagwu said the permission for hosting the trade fair has been received and the fair would help the business community of Aba to exhibit its expertise in garment, leather and other related items before the world.
Aba is the commercial centre of Abia State and due to its proven proficiency in garment manufacturing, it is considered as Nigeria's fashion hub.
Around 20,000 people are directly employed in the Aba garment industry, and more than 50,000 people indirectly earn their livelihood.
Mr. Alagwu stated that the shoe/leather industry of the city is the country's pride, as shoes manufactured here, though informally, are shipped to other countries, mostly to other West African nations.
He lamented that inadequacy of infrastructural facilities and finances hamper the growth of industrious entrepreneurs in the city.
