Los Angeles in California state has become the number one place for garment and textile manufacturing in the United States.

Clothing and textile sector earnings of Los Angeles have grown from US$ 22.8 billion in 1997 to US$ 40.3 billion in 2010. This is in spite of a reduction in workforce by nearly half during the same period, according to Ilse Metchek, President of the California Fashion Association.

The apparel and textile related manufacturing sector in the Southern Californian region, including Orange County and San Diego, employed 207.318 workers in 1997. However, this number reduced to 128,148 people in 2010, said Metchek while speaking at the “2012 West Coast Manufacturing Conference”.

During the intertwining years, entrepreneurs have retained segments of manufacturing that they are doing best and have outsourced the remaining.

The Los Angeles garment and textile manufacturers are in the process of increasing their sales through e-commerce, speakers said at the conference.
