The exports of apparels from the Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar have registered an impressive growth and were worth US$ 770 million in 2011, as per the figures released by the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA).

However, the clothing exports fell short of the 2001 record of US$ 829 million, the highest earning achieved by Myanmar garment exports so far.

Myanmar traditionally exports its apparels to Japan, South Korea, Germany and other European countries. But in recent years, the country has widened its export markets to include countries like Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Turkey.

Japan accounted for the largest share of Myanmarese clothing exports in 2011 with exports valued at US$ 348 million, a phenomenal 90 percent growth over its exports worth US$ 183 million achieved in 2010.

South Korea turned out to be the second largest destination for Myanmarese garments and the country imported US$ 232 million worth of apparel items last year, showing a rise of 87 percent over its 2010 figure of US$ 124 million.

Garments are mainly produced in nearly 150 manufacturing units located in Rangoon, the largest city in Myanmar.
