Nearly 350 readymade garment (RMG) manufacturing units in Ashulia Apparel Industrial Belt, located on the outskirts of Bangldeshi capital Dhaka, remained shut for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday as workers continued to protest demanding wage hike.

RMG workers in the Ashulia industrial belt are demanding a huge rise in their monthly salaries in view of the increase in prices of essential commodities.

The apparel workers have warned of further intensifying their agitation if their demand for wage rise is not met.

However, owners of garment units have rejected the workers demand saying the last wage hike was made less than two years ago in 2010, and the sector would not be able to sustain another salary hike at this juncture.

Labour Minister Khondker Mosharraf Hossain, who has already held several rounds of negotiations to resolve the issue, said around 450,000-500,000 people are employed in nearly 350 RMG factories in Ashulia.
