The retail sales of apparels in Japan increased slightly by 0.8 percent year-on-year to 97,994 million yen in August 2012, according to the Japan Chain Stores Association, which compiles data from 7,842 stores owned by 57 companies.

The rise in apparel sales was in contrast to the overall decline of 1.3 percent year-on-year witnessed by the stores during the month.

The growth in garment retail sales is attributed to favourable sales of summer clothing items.

While the retail sales of menswear grew by 3.7 percent year-on-year to 16,822 million yen, those of womenswear rose by 0.8 percent year-on-year to 30,493 million yen. However, sales of other garments dipped by 0.1 percent y-o-y to 50,678 million yen.

Short-sleeve T-shirts, polo shirts and casual pants were more sought after in men’s clothing, whereas cut & sewn items, skirts, T-shirts and jeans were more in demand among womenswear.

Retail sales of short-sleeve dress shirts, slacks and ‘Cool Biz’-related summer suits were also favourable during the month under review.
