Arcadia Group raises garment sourcing from UK factories

The CEO of Arcadia Group Limited, Sir Philip Green, has given a boost to the UK clothing industry by increasingly asking British garment makers to supply apparels to his fashion kingdom.

The Arcadia Group has increased sourcing of apparels from UK factories from 20 to 47 percent in the past one year, The Mail quoted Sir Philip Green as saying.

The man behind the popular English brands like Topshop and BHS said the shift towards the UK apparel manufacturers has resulted due to the escalating labour costs in China and other Far Eastern countries, which have affected the retailer’s cost benefits of producing garments abroad.

He said the main advantage of sourcing from UK manufacturers is that they can react and bring in the latest designs more quickly as compared to designing, manufacturing and transporting clothing from the Far East countries, which can take months.

The textile and clothing industry employs more than 100,000 people in Britain, but many of these production units are suffering because manufacturing orders have been pulled away to China and other countries over the past decade by the country’s major retailers.

Meanwhile, other high-end UK brands like John Lewis, Asos, Mulberry and Burberry are also planning to shift their manufacturing bases to UK.
