In 2012, China’s textile and garment exports grew at slow pace, but the growth rate of clothing exports exceeded the growth rate of textile exports.

Last year, China exported textiles worth US$ 95.8 billion, up 1.2 percent year-on-year, while its apparel exports fetched US$ 159.18 billion, up 3.9 percent year-on-year.

Cotton enterprises faced unfavourable situation throughout the year, owing to rising prices of raw material and increasing costs of labour. The growth in garment exports was mainly driven by increase in prices, as the overall textile and apparel exports declined in volume.

Among textiles, the average export prices of cotton yarn and cotton fabric fell 15.1 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively, in 2012.

Among apparels, exports of knitted and woven garments totaled 30.69 billion sets, down 1.1 percent y-o-y, mainly due to larger decline of exports to the EU and Japan, which were down 11.5 percent y-o-y and 5.7 percent y-o-y, respectively.

The average price of apparel exports was US$ 4.43 per set, an increase of 4.5 percent y-o-y. While the average price of garments exported to the US and the EU fell, the average price of clothing exported to Asean countries increased rapidly by 52.7 percent y-o-y.
