“At Jo-Ann, we care deeply about helping children and young adults pursue the education they deserve. For that reason, we have set up this scholarship for first generation Kent State students in addition to other corporate social responsibility programs aimed at bettering the education of students in our communities,” said Tom Williams, senior vice president, human resources for Jo-Ann. “Vanessa is already a very accomplished young lady, and we hope that this scholarship allows her to pursue opportunities she may not have been able to otherwise. We wish her the best of luck as she continues to follow her dreams.”

The Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. First Generation Scholarship for Fashion Design and Merchandising is awarded to a first generation college student enrolled in The Fashion School at Kent State University. Scholarship recipients are selected based upon academic achievement and involvement in activities relating to fabrics, crafts or sewing. In addition, recipients must have a minimum grade point average of 3.50.

All applicants must also write an essay as to why they are applying for this scholarship and what it means to them to be one of the first members of their family to commit to graduating with a four-year degree. In this essay, applicants are also asked to address specific examples of how they performed as a leader among their sewing or crafting social group.
