Exports of readymade garments from Bangladesh increased 11.5 percent year-on-year to US$ 17.31 billion, in the first ten months of the current fiscal year that began on July 1, 2012, according to latest data released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).

The woven apparel exports earned US$ 8.92 billion during July-April period, showing a growth of 13.98 percent year-on-year.

Knitwear exports rose by 8.93 percent to touch US$ 8.38 billion during the ten-month period, compared to exports of US$ 7.69 billion made during the corresponding period of last fiscal.

Overall exports from Bangladesh fetched US$ 21.78 billion during the initial ten months of the current fiscal, compared to revenue of US$ 19.77 billion earned during the same period last fiscal.

However, July-April total exports were short of the set target of US$ 22.53 billion for the period.

After the deadly Tazreen factory fire incident last year, it was feared that Bangladesh clothing exports might take a decline, due to questions being raised about the safety conditions in apparel factories.

Currently, Bangladesh is the second-largest garment exporter, next only to China.
