Just as the Bangladesh garment sector was limping back to normalcy after the April 24 building collapse which resulted in the death of over 500 people, most of them garment workers, another incident, this time a fire accident, has occurred at a garment factory in Mirpur.

The devastating fire at a readymade garment manufacturing factory in Mirpur area of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka took place on the night of May 8, 2013, resulting in the death of at least eight people.

Mr. Mahbubur Rahman, the managing director of the garment making unit, was among those who were killed, according to media reports.

The death toll was less as the fire broke out around 11 p.m., while the garment unit had closed for the day at 7 p.m. However, Mr. Rahman was in a meeting with few others on the ninth floor of the eleven-storey building.

The latest incident would further pressurize the apparel manufacturers in Bangladesh to ensure safe working conditions. It would also make global buyers rethink before placing orders with Bangladeshi manufacturers.
