Bangladesh to showcase garments in Malaysia next month

Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), along with the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and an event management company Headmaster Events, would be organizing a three-day fair to showcase readymade garments in Malaysia next month.

Talking to media, BGMEA vice president SM Mannan Kochi said the three-day fair to be held in mid-August would be the largest single country fair in Malaysia.

He said if properly explored, Malaysia can become one of the largest markets for Bangladeshi garments.

Since almost all internationally renowned apparel brands and retailers have their operations in Malaysia, the fair would provide a good opportunity for Bangladeshi exporters to increase their share in the Malaysian market, he added.

Presently, Bangladesh is the third biggest apparel supplier to Malaysia and Bangladesh’s position will be further strengthened in the Malaysian market in near future, Mr. Kochi said.

Besides garments, home textiles, handicrafts, leather goods and various other Bangladeshi products would also be exhibited at the fair in over 240 stalls.

A high-powered business delegation from the Bangladesh garment sector would attend the fair, and also participate in an international seminar on the Bangladesh’s clothing sector.

Syed SM Zafar, chief financial officer of Headmaster Events, said Malaysia is considered an important link to the Asia-Pacific region and several global buyers have set up their offices in the country.

He said the three-day fair is likely to be attended by manufacturers, importers, exporters, buyers, sellers and distributors and would provide a good exposure for companies keen on Malaysian expansion.

In 2012, Bangladesh exported US$ 69 million worth of garments to Malaysia.
