The Southern District Court of New York, where the Florentine company, last January, had filed its civil lawsuit against 15 defendants holding a total of 95 domain names that infringed upon its prestigious trademark and sold counterfeit goods, issued its decision, awarding damages for over four million dollars to Salvatore Ferragamo. The same court had previously ordered the transfer of domain names to the company and shut down the websites.
This latest decision, issued a few days ago, orders the counterfeiters to compensate the company for 4.3 million dollars.
“We are extremely pleased with the New York Court’s decision,” stated Ferruccio Ferragamo, Chairman of the Salvatore Ferragamo Group, “which understood the danger of counterfeiting for consumers.
“Our company is committed to protecting our brand and contributing to the fight against counterfeiting, which for many years has beleaguered the world’s most prestigious fashion and luxury brands. The Internet has now become a leading channel for traffickers of counterfeit goods, and is now the central focus of the recent lawsuits filed by our Group, historically one of the most affected by this crime.”
The fierce battle against counterfeiting, fought in courtrooms around the world, is increasingly seeing the success of legitimate trademark owners, thanks in part to local and international legislators who are gradually becoming aware of the problem and updating legislation with tools to defend the rights of those suffering the effects of piracy and fakes.
Counterfeiting can damage the brand’s image, its business and reputation in terms of craftsmanship and made-in-Italy quality, and this is why Salvatore Ferragamo is taking legal action around the world to protect its products and its customers.
