Turkish apparel exports rise 10.7% in first two months

According to the ITKIB data, the country exported apparel worth $3.1 billion during the months of January and February this year, whereas during the same months last year, garment exports amounted to $2.8 billion.

Sub-sector wise, the highest exports were made from the knitted apparel and accessories category, with exports amounting to $1.6 billion during the first two months of 2014, registering a rise of 12.2 percent compared to the same months last year.

Exports from woven apparel and accessories ranked second with exports totaling $1 billion during January and February this year, recording an increase of 7.9 percent year-on-year, followed by other ready-made goods and home textiles, with exports worth $390 million, indicating a jump of 11 percent, compared to the same months last year.

As per the ITKIB data, Germany was the main destination for apparel exports from Turkey during the first two months of 2014, with exports totaling $694.10 million, followed by the UK with $347.31 million, Spain with $239.95 million, France with $216.21 million and the Netherlands with $188.14 million.

Majority of the apparel exports from Turkey were destined to the European Union (EU) with the region accounting for 76.6 percent of the overall exports of clothing from the country during the first two months of 2014.

Last year, Turkey’s apparel exports touched $17.3 billion, indicating a surge of 8.3 percent, compared to 2012, as per ITKIB data.
