Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes visited the jeans manufacturing unit of Blue Design, located in the city of San Lorenzo, a statement from the Office of the President said.

Blue Design is currently the number one company in Paraguay, in terms of development, production and exports of clothing, especially jeans. The company employs more than 500 Paraguayan workers.

During the visit, the President was accompanied by a delegation, which included Minister of Industry and Commerce Gustavo Leite.

Maquila’s like Blue Design import fabric from Brazil or some other country where the fabric is available at lower cost, which is then used to manufacture jeans for export to a major chain in Brazil, Minister Leite said.

Paraguay today has skilled and high-quality workforce for the clothing industry, and soon the country might have industries that provide fabrics to units that manufacture jeans of high quality, he added.

Mentioning the competitive advantages that Paraguay has, Minister Leite said Paraguay currently has fairly low-cost and abundant electricity compared to other countries in the region.

Since 1996, Blue Design is producing and designing complete collections of jeans and raincoat at its San Lorenzo plant, which has become a benchmark for many in the business. Over the last five years, the company’s sales have grown at a rate of 30 percent per year, the statement said.

The company has an output of 350,000 pairs of jeans per month, and it exports to several countries, including Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and the US, Jorge Bunchicoff, director of the company said.
