KRSOA has decided to call a rally of over 1 lakh small retail shop owners in the southern Maharashtra, which is under threat of malls or Wal-Mart kind of chains, which may enter the region.

Speaking about the grave situation, M P Harel, Association Chief, said that around 10,000 retail shops in Kolhapur city and more than 15,000 shops in semi-urban and rural areas are at risk due to flourishing malls.

Globalization and introduction of foreign retail chains is a disturbing trend threatening local shops, declared former minister and leader of the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) N D Patil.

Local shop owners are therefore expected to unite and resist the so called 'mall menace.'

To prevent small consumers from entering malls, Patil advised them to provide facilities to consumers, whose purchasing power is limited.
