Snapdeal beefs up tech team, brings back Gaurav Gupta

In a move to bring top talent back to India, Snapdeal, one of India’s largest online marketplace, has announced the appointment of Gaurav Gupta as vice president – engineering. In his new role, Gupta will spearhead the company’s cloud platform and technology infrastructure, Snapdeal said in a statement.

As the company continues to grow at a fast pace, robust cloud network will endow Snapdeal with the ability to rapidly scale-up operational capabilities. Gupta’s appointment to head the cloud services function is in line with company’s efforts towards building specialized domain strengths. Snapdeal’s next generation cloud platform will change the way applications are run and managed in the data centers, the statement said.

The technology team at Snapdeal is currently 1000 people strong and company looks at doubling it by the end of this year. The company has also made a few senior hires in this team who will play a key role in building a future ready and innovative platform. Bhuvan Gupta and Jeyendran Venugopal recently joined the Snapdeal family as vice president – engineering and technology advisor respectively.

Gaurav Gupta comes with over 13 years of experience in building enterprise products. He has spent over a decade in Silicon Valley and has worked with many start-ups and large organizations like Cisco, Symantec etc.

Speaking about his appointment, Gupta said “Snapdeal’s growth in the technology domain, well-past the start-up phase, has been unprecedented and I believe that the subsequent level of innovation will happen here. In the new cloud platform the underlying infrastructure would be completely abstracted away from the applications and the workloads would get dynamically assigned and reassigned to run on the data center depending on real-time signals from the application.”

Snapdeal co-founder Rohit Bansal said “With the size and scale of our technology platform and our vision of where it’s headed, we’ve been on a mission to build an absolutely world class technology team at Snapdeal. It is our stated plan to bring talented Indians from across the globe back to India, because we can provide the right set of opportunities in building technology that’ll make our country a better place.
