Work has started on an apparel and garment making centre in Agartala after textiles minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar laid the foundation stone of the project on May 20.

A Silk Processing and Printing Unit was also inaugurated on the occasion, by the Union Textiles Minister and the Tripura CM. The project cost is Rs. 3.41 crore.

These units are expected to provide employment to a large number of people in Tripura and would lead the large scale production and processing of garments in the region. The project contributes to the "Make In India" programme in textile sector, with particular emphasis on the north eastern states.

The apparel and garment making centre is being set up as part of a landmark initiative announced by prime minister Narendra Modi in Nagaland last December. The PM had announced that an apparel and garment making centre shall be constructed in all north eastern states. (SH)
