Garment industry is struggling to cope with the ever rising competitive pressure from Chinese products.

Suleyman Orakcioglu, Vice President of Exporters Assembly, stated, “The policy with America caused us to forget commerce. Our ready-to-wear export, which decreased 16.8 percent last year, dropped 25 percent by Q1 this year.”

He, also being the President of Istanbul Ready-to-Wear and Apparel Exporters Union, stressed that this situation was unacceptable.

Orakcioglu, further stated, “The Chinese Wave, experienced after the removal of textile and ready-to-wear quotas in the US market, and also overvalued position of YTL against dollar and privileged commercial agreements, which the US signed with Egypt and Jordan, decreased the foreign trade volume between 2 countries to the bottom. The decrease of our ready-to-wear export to the US is the reason of this historic regression. Ready-to-wear sector, that has the 1/4 of Turkey's total export to USA with 1.4 billion dollars, is pushed to the worst performance of history.”

He expressed frustration about the fact that of the total ready-to-wear imports to the US worth around $90 billion, Turkey accounts for just two percent share.

Turkey ranks fourth among the ready-to-wear export countries in the world, however, is facing major troubles penetrating the US market.
