With the rise in temperature, sales of early summer apparel increased by 6.2 per cent year-on-year to nearly 109 billion yen in May 2015, according to the data collected by the Japan Chain Stores Association from its 59 member firms that together operate 9,357 stores.

On a same store basis, sales of womenswear remained flat compared to a year before at 33.119 billion yen. Formal wear, cut-and-sewn products, casual pants and shirts saw an increase in sales, while jackets and three-quarter sleeve cardigans sales moved slowly.

Sales of men’s apparel were up 0.8 percent year-on-year to 21.160 billion yen during the month. Strong sales were witnessed in suits, jackets, slacks, dress shirts and short pants, while sales were less in full-sleeve shirts.

The month registered an increase of 12.8 per cent year-on-year in sales of other garments and accessories, which earned 54.719 billion yen. These included innerwear, lingerie and home wear for men and women.

Growth was also witnessed in sales of home furnishings, the association said. (RKS)
