Bangladesh garment exports up 4% in FY15

Exports of readymade garments from Bangladesh increased by more than four per cent year over year in the just concluded financial year 2014-15, according to the latest government data.

In the 12 months to June 2015, Bangladesh earned $25.491 billion in garment exports, registering an increase of 4.08 per cent over exports of $24.491 billion made in the previous fiscal, Export Promotion Bureau data showed.

However, the 4.08 per cent growth rate is much lower compared to 13.83 per cent growth witnessed in fiscal 2013-14.

Category-wise, knitwear exports grew by 3.13 per cent to $12.426 billion in 2014-15, as against exports of $12.049 billion made during the previous fiscal, as per the data. These were 5.97 per cent less than the export target of $13.215 billion set for the year by the government.

Likewise, exports of woven apparel increased by 5 per cent to $13.064 billion during the fiscal, compared to exports of $12.442 billion during 2013-14. However, these fell short by 4.51 per cent compared to the $13.681 billion target for the period.

Woven and knitted apparel and clothing accessories’ exports together accounted for 81.7 per cent of $31.198 billion worth of total exports made by Bangladesh during the year. Garment exports grew at a slightly faster pace compared to the 3.35 per cent growth achieved by total Bangladeshi exports.

US, Germany and the UK are top markets for Bangladeshi garments. (RKS)
