Garment industry can add 5000 more workers if RoO modified in SPARTECA

Fiji's garment industry has retrenched more than 10,000 people as reported by Rajeshwar Singh, General Secretary, Fiji Public Service Association.

Rajeshwar stated, 5000 additional people could be employed in the industry if the rules of origin (RoO) requisite were changed in the South Pacific Regional Trade and Economic Co-operation Agreement - SPARTECA.

Fiji expects Australian and New Zealand governments to oblige and review SPARTECA, and Fiji will be allowed to utilize 25 percent local content in their exports rather than the 50 percent, as was bestowed to least developed countries.

Fiji currently endears on similar trade crisis on sugar industry front too, as the reform of the sugar protocol and the expected decrease in European Union prices by 36 percent in the recent times, has also given enormous anxiety to Fiji's.
