Apparel retailer Mothers Work Inc announced net sales for June 2006 and stated that it expects to meet or exceed its previous earnings guidance for the third quarter of fiscal 2006 ended June 30, 2006. Net sales for the month of June 2006 increased 6.8 percent to $49.6 million from $46.4 million reported for the month of June 2005.
The increase in net sales for June 2006 was primarily driven by increased comparable store sales and increased internet sales. Comparable store sales for June 2006 increased 6.2 percent (based on 1,486 locations) versus a comparable store sales decrease of 0.5 percent (based on 996 locations) for June 2005.
The 6.2 percent comparable store sales increase for the month of June 2006 was favorably impacted by approximately one percentage point by having one more Friday and one less Wednesday in June 2006 compared to June 2005. During June 2006, the Company opened one store and closed four stores.
Comparable store sales increased 6.4 percent during the third quarter of fiscal 2006 (based on 1,472 locations) versus a comparable store sales decrease of 1.9 percent during the third quarter of fiscal 2005 (based on 978 locations). For the quarter ended June 30, 2006, the Company opened one store and closed 17 stores, with one of these store closings related to a prior period multi-brand store opening.
Rebecca Matthias, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mothers Work, noted, "We are very pleased to report anothermonth of very strong sales performance, as we delivered a comparable store sales increase of 6.2 percent for the month, which exceeded our expectations.”
