Deb Shops reports 9.6% comparable store sales drop

Teen apparel retailer Deb Shops Inc has reported that comparable store sales decreased 9.6% in July 2006 as compared to July 2005.
Total sales decreased 5.9% to $23.1 million from $24.5 million in July 2005.
For the quarter ended July 31, 2006, comparable store sales decreased 4.3% and total sales decreased 0.5% to $75.3 million from $75.7 million for the prior year quarter. During the six-month period ended July 31, 2006, comparable store sales decreased 0.8% while total sales increased 2.2% to $156.6 million from $153.2 million for the prior year period.
The company reports financial results on the calendar month. Therefore, differences in timing will occur when comparing Deb Shops' results to those of retailers reporting on a 4-5-4 calendar. During the month of July 2006, there were four Fridays compared to five Fridays in July 2005.
Deb Shops Inc is a national specialty retailer of fashionable apparel, shoes and accessories for juniors in both regular and plus sizes. It operates 333 specialty apparel stores in 42 states under the DEB and Tops 'N Bottoms names.
