Modernisation becomes top priority for hosiery makers

North India Hosiery Industry Association has been created by around 50 manufacturers of hosiery items with an aim to reenergize the industry. 20 years ago, Kanpur was second only to Kolkata, but in recent years, it has slumped to the turnover of just around Rs300 crore.

Subject to clearance from bureaucracy of Uttar Pradesh, the association wants to set up a hosiery park in the city. This idea struck their mind when they visited Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu.

Industries in Tiruppur had machines which were technologically advanced and that inspired the association to modernize their units, informed Manoj Banka, President of the association and a hosiery manufacturer himself.

He went on to say that units in Tirupur were using most advanced machines of Taiwan and Japan for stitching, the key for finished products and for bleaching as well.

Pramod Surana, the Secretary of the association said that the visit to the units made them realize that to survive they have to modernize themselves, which needed trained manpower not available with them.

Small Industries Service Institution (SISI), Kanpur, and Mahela Machines, the merchants of Taiwanese machines were brought together by the association to train the first batch of 12 people trained by trainers from Tirupur.

Trained people wishing to set their own stitching machines are given Rs2 lakh from the Pradhan Mantri Rozgar Yojana and after getting placement they receive Rs4,000 per month.

However the lackluster response of the UP Government has put the plans in shambles.

A hosiery textile park at Ruma, at distance of 30 km from Kanpur had been set up by UP State Industrial Development Corporation.

But the plots were not only sold to the people concerning the industry but also to investors. Quite astonishingly, after selling all plots, SIDC has put a selling price of Rs2,000 per square metre.
