As per the recommendations of the Minimum Wage Board signed by six members, final pay structure for the workers of readymade garment (RMG) sector has been set at Tk1, 662.50 as the minimum monthly wage which includes basic salary, house rent and other allowances for an entry-level worker.
Two different pay structures were announced by the board for garment workers and employees and the recommendations will be forwarded to the Government on the next working day.
Seven and four different grades have been prepared for workers and employees respectively. Grade one worker will receive Tk5, 140 while grade six will receive Tk1, 851. Apprentice worker will receive Tk1, 200 per month.
The board had earlier decided on a three-tier proposal but had to revert back because of huge protests by garment owners. But this time around, decision was taken keeping in mind the demand of the workers and ability of the owners.
Annisul Huq, representative of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said that they have agreed to the proposal despite their limited abilities to pay wages.
Most of the workers unions had favoured pay structure ranging between Tk1, 650 and Tk1, 800 for minimum wages. Zafrul Hasan, representative of workers on the board said that though draft did not protect the interest of the workers, he relented after tough negotiations.
