Wildcat strikes hampers apparel sector's growth

Increasing number of wildcat strikes are raising concerns for garment sector, which accounts for 80 percent of total exports.

This is considered as threat to existence of garment industry as well as to all industrial activity.

Most of the strikes occur due to unpaid or low wages and unfair dismissals.

In 2006, exports of apparel stood at US $2.6 billion, an increase of 17 percent over 2005.

Out of the apparel exports, about 75 percent of the clothing was dispatch to US, Canada and Europe.

Garment industry currently offers average wages of US$50 per month to nearly 300,000 employees, most of them are women.
