Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's sari distribution scheme will not materialize as the model code of conduct has come in force due to announcement of poll for assembly elections in the state.
He had announced to distribute 2.5 crore saris to those living below poverty line involving an expenditure of Rs250 crore. Budgetary provisions were made for sari distribution and a committee was formed to invite tenders for purchase of saris.
None of the tenderer could meet specification mentioned in the tender document.
The State Government diluted specifications to push the scheme through.
A last attempt was made to get the saris distributed through a cabinet decision.
"It was decided in principle to ask one of the government agencies to purchase saris as it would have saved the government from any possible allegation of bungling," said an official.
But with election schedules being announced, the sari distribution scheme could not take off.
