The new legislation of Sri Lanka, which restricts mothers with children below five years from taking up low-end jobs overseas, has been approved by the cabinet early this month and will be enforced soon.
Statistics revealed by the Sri Lankan Government shows that children who were left behind by the mothers to take up overseas jobs become helpless and vulnerable to abuses, and suffer from malnutrition and lack of proper healthcare.
This restriction will have an adverse effect on migrant workers in the UAE where a large number of Sri Lankan women are employed garment factories.
