CHENNAI:

Garment industry is looking at achieving an export target of $25 billion by 2010-11, an Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) official said.

Exports of garment is expected to reach $9.3 billion this year by end of March, registering a growth of around 9 to 10 percent over last year, said Vijay Aggarwal Chairman AEPC on the occasion of the inauguration of Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) here.

In achieving the target of $25 billion the industry would need an additional 1.5 million people and an investment of Rs35,000 crore in terms of related infrastructure, he said.

AEPC plans to set up 50 training centres, besides the 22 centres it has at present across the country, he said.

"We will be setting up six more centres by September 2007 and also an academic cell at Gurgaon," he said.
