MAS Holdings subsidiary MAS Intimates signed a contract of agreement with Marks & Spencer (M&S) on 16 May 2007 to build an "eco friendly" manufacturing facility in Sri Lanka.

The factory, which would cost approximately US$ 6 million, will be totally financed by MAS Holdings along with M&S providing Solar Power equipment and design assistance.

It is the first eco friendly apparel manufacturing facility of its kind to be built in Sri Lanka, and the plant will be housed within the premises of the MAS Fabric Park in Thulhiriya, which was acquired by MAS mid last year.

The factory where Lingerie products exclusively for M&S will be produced is scheduled to be ready for commercial operations by the end of this year, according to Dian Gomez a CEO at MAS holdings.

"Green Manufacturing" is where products are manufactured with minimal impact to the wellbeing of the environment," says Dian Gomez who continued to add…

"In order to be a world class Green Manufacturer the factory will be adapting to innovative solutions in conservation of energy, sourcing of renewable energy including solar power, environmental preservation, and employee wellbeing all geared towards achieving Carbon Neutrality.

The construction of the factory will comply with BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) environmental excellence ratings for building construction, by employing innovative and iconic design to maximize green space."
