Star Garments, a leading manufacturer of garments opened a new factory in Kotmale on 23rd June 2007. The new facility was opened by Hon. Navin Dissanayake, Minister of Investment Promotion, who was accompanied by several senior BOI officials.

The Minister visited the new facility and was briefed on the processes used by the company in the manufacture of garments by Mr. A. Sukumaran, Managing Director of Star Garments.

Minister Navin Dissanayake also addressed the management and staff of the factory on the importance of their sector to the Sri Lankan economy, stating that the garments industry must continue to maintain high standards to meet the challenges of international competition.

Star Garments is a well-established BOI company, which has been a pioneer investor. Its first plant was set up in 1978 in the BOI's Katunayake Export Processing Zone.

Star Garments is owned by Multi National, USA and has a presence in New York, Hong Kong, London and China. It is not just a major manufacturer of garments but also an important employer with a staff of 10,000 workers in seven factories spread across the width and breadth of Sri Lanka.

The new factory that has been completed is a Nipayum Sri Lanka project, which is an integral part of the Mahinda Chinthana Programme. The Nipayum Sri Lanka Programme has advanced considerably since its establishment over a year ago. To date a total of 224 projects has been approved by the BOI out of a total of 300. These enterprises have given a new dimension to the economy of the people of outlying areas. Nipayum Sri Lanka projects have played a part in addressing some of hardships faced by communities in less favoured areas.

One way that the project established in Kotmale will impact significantly on the local community will be by providing 1,200 new jobs. Another positive factor is that it will contribute towards strengthening Sri Lanka's garment industry, which is one of the major employers as well as a key export sector in the country.
