Customs Department statistics show that during the first five months of this year, the country exported 26.4 million skirts worth US $136.6 million, an increase of 49.9 percent and 69 percent year-on-year. Of this, America and EU remained top importers, accounting for 90 percent of the total imports.
During this period, the US imported 20.87 million skirts worth around $111.8 million, registering a year-on-year growth of 67 percent and 80.8 percent respectively, making up 79 percent of total exports turnover of Vietnam.
EU ranked second in the importer list, purchasing 2.98 million pieces worth $11.1 million, up by 11.8 percent and 376 percent over same period in 2006.
In the EU league, Britain stood at the top, importing 1.4 million pieces worth $5.94 million and constituting for 46 percent of total skirts exported in the region during this period.
Other major markets include Japan, Canada, Taiwan and Korea, which gave a sharp growth in imports of these products.
In May alone, the exports turnover of skirts from Vietnam touched 5.37 million, generating $26.5 million and giving a rise of three percent compared to the previous month but presenting a two-fold growth over same period in 2006.
