Aeropostale Inc, a mall-based specialty retailer of casual and active apparel for young women and men announced that total net sales for the four-week period ended August 4, 2007 increased 17.7% to $111.7 million, from $94.9 million for the four-week period ended July 29, 2006. Same store sales for the month decreased 11.9%, compared to the corresponding four-week period ended August 5, 2006.
For the second quarter of fiscal 2007, total net sales increased 13.3% to $311.2 million, from $274.6 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2006. For the second quarter, same store sales decreased 4.1%, compared to the corresponding period ended August 5, 2006. Year-to-date, total net sales increased 12.7% to $587.0 million, from $520.9 million in the year-ago period. Year-to-date, same store sales decreased 1.1%, compared to the corresponding period ended August 5, 2006.
Julian R. Geiger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, "Our sales results for the month reflect the negative impact from a shift in the back to school calendar in certain markets that we had previously discussed, as well as a more challenging overall retail environment than we had anticipated."
"While our sales for July were below our initial plan, we were able to continue to manage our promotional cadence and inventory levels during the month. As such, we expect to achieve second quarter earnings in the range of $0.27 - $0.28 per diluted share, slightly ahead of our previously issuedguidance."
The company believes that the disclosure of sales on a pro-forma basis due to the 53rd week in fiscal 2006, which is a non-GAAP financial measure, provides investors useful information to help them better understand the company's expected results.
