Gokaldas Exports, in which the US based equity giant Blackstone has picked up a 50.1 percent stake, is planning to set up 2 more manufacturing facilities in 2 and 3 tier cities in Karnataka.

The Bangalore-based leading exporter of garments, as a part of its expansion plan is setting up production units in Mangalore and Hubli. The company, currently, has 49 manufacturing locations across South India.

High costs of setting up units in Bangalore was the key reason behind this move. The real estate is very expensive and there is an acute shortage of labor in the city. The cost of real estate in these secondary and tertiary is very economical compared to prices in the big cities of the south.

The company had last year set up 6 new units including the SEZ at Chennai. They also have a presence in towns like Mysore and Tumkur. The 2 units in Mangalore and Hubli are proposed to manufacture around 2 million units each per year.

In future the company would be looking at expanding in secondary and tertiary towns and cities.
