Winter turns out blissful for garment retailers

An unexpected cold is sending chills in southern China marking below 10 degree Celsius for 19 consecutive days and breaking a record of the past 30 years. Huge profits are being reaped by business firms selling winter-wear cotton and wollen clothes.

Retail sales in China, rose 16 percent to 255 billion yuan over the holidays, despite the worst winter storms in half a century.

Electric blankets and cotton padded garments nearly got exhausted from the store shelves, irrespective of the fact that prices of these products were sky rocketing. A hovering fear, about the stores being closed for the Chinese New Year, compelled parents to buy the warm clothes in advance.

Although, shops generally open after 16th of the month, the extremity of the cold caused shop owners to start off right from February 11 to meet the rising demands. Not only has the last year's stock finished, this years supply is also depleting rapidly and since padded cotton clothes are handmade and consume time to get produced it will be nearly impossible to replenish the stock.

Electric blankets made the most number of sale but shops did have a good store of these products since a drastic climatic change was much unexpected.
