Lesley Millar, Professor of Textile Culture at the University College for the Creative Arts Epsom is putting the finishing touches to Cloth & Culture Now, a major contemporary textiles exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia which opens on January 29.

Featuring new work by 35 artists from Estonia, Finland, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania and the UK, the project represents an important collaborative initiative between the University College for the Creative Arts and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

As curator Lesley Millar has brought together some stunning works that use traditional techniques and materials such knitting and embroidery, explorations of new materials and technology, large architectural installations, performance work and video, as well as narrative based and decorative textiles.

"The 35 artists in the exhibition represent the most exciting contemporary textiles practitioners in each of their countries," says Lesley. "The artists are using textile history to investigate the importance of specific cultural identity and trans-cultural influences in their work."

The artists in the exhibition are producing work which reflects both the history of textile production in their country and how their practice is informed by cultural influences which transcend geographical boundaries.

The exhibition opens at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia, Norwich on 29 January 2008 and will run until 1 June. It will then be shown at the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester in the Autumn of 2008, before travelling to other participating countries.
