A shipment from Haiwang Clothing Co Ltd in Jiangsu Province, carrying 8,000 pieces of garments to France, the Netherlands and other countries, has been denied entry on scores that the goods contained APEO (Alkylphenols Polyoxyethylene Ethers Compounds) content much higher than the prescribed standards.

Widely used in spheres of textile, detergents, oil, agricultural, chemicals, printing and many other industries, APEO has a global consumption of 800,000 tons.

As biological toxicity of the chemical is greater, APEO is prone to degradation problems, instigating EU to restrict its use according to the industries. An entirely different set of standards have been set for APEO content in textile fabrics.

It will be the first instance where Jiangsu encountered technical barriers while making exports to EU. A number of other garment factories in the province have received similar orders from foreign importers and considering the present situation, experts have warned enterprises to comply with the requirements, else its goods transaction meets a similar fate.

As a precautionary measure, experts have suggested the manufacturing companies to start production only after receiving a written notice from the foreign trade companies.
