RMG workers succeed in securing their demands

Workers of three garment factories on April 6, took to violence demanding an increase in their allowances.

Vexed by the inconsiderate attitude of their employers, workers of Sweater Ltd, Global Specialised Garments Ltd (unit-1) and Savar Sweater Ltd (all conglomerates of Azim Group), barged on to the streets and savagely destroyed some 50 vehicles in Kalurghat BSCIC Industrial Area.

Workers expressed apprehension over a Tk10 cut on their Tk34 a garment allowance and demanded not only a revision of this decision but also an increase in their breakfast allowance.

The management of Azim Group refused to meet their demands calling it unreasonable and thereafter shut down the three units for indefinite period. The result was a frenzied protest which surely must have shaken the company.

A tripartite meeting between representatives of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Azim Group and the workers took place later. The decision was taken in favor of the demands made by the workers and the situation was finally brought under control.
