Japan emerges as largest socks exporting market

Statistics revealed by Vietnamese General Department of Customs shows that in the first four months of this year, Japan emerged as the largest consumer of Vietnamese textile and garment industry especially for socks.

During the period, some 3.5 million pairs of socks were shipped to Japan amounting to US $2.5 million and accounting for 40.3 percent of the total socks export of the Vietnamese textile and apparel industry. These figures represented a rise of 3.6 percent in volume and 17.2 percent in value compared to 2007.

Moreover, the total export turnover stood at $6.2 million from 21.4 million pairs of socks, surging by 56.7 percent and 126.5 percent respectively. In the month of April alone, the export turnover reached 5 million pairs fetching $1.6 million posting a year on year increase of 91.2 and 47.7 percent respectively.

Prices were quoted at $0.29 per pair on average, FOB, dropping by 30.9 percent compared to the previous year.

Socks exports to other countries including EU also surged considerably with volume touching 8.8 million pairs for US, fetching $1.9 million, up by 104.5 and 57.8 percent respectively. Korea on the other hand bought 4.9 million pairs for $0.71 million.
